Renowned for its extensive collection of printed and manuscript
music, the Henry Watson Music Library also boasts a broad
range of concert programmes and accompanying press cuttings that span
across the war years.
In analysing music performance at the time we hope to identify key
themes and patterns in the repertoire of both professional and amateur
music societies, and draw conclusions about the impact of the
war on the local music scene.
Additionally, by exploiting the subtleties of the collection to
supplement the RNCM and Hallé Concert Society’s archives we hope to
shed new light on how music was able to restore morale and reaffirm
patriotism in Manchester.
